Flowers Galore

Oh sleep! it is a gentle thing,
Beloved from pole to pole.
~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Winter has definitely arrived here - at least in the mornings.  We have been down around or just below freezing every morning for almost a week now.  In the morning inside the house it gets down to 55 to 58 degrees.  Makes for great sleeping weather.  We are some of those strange people that turn off the heater and open the windows at night.  I love waking up during the night with a cold nose.  I just snuggle under the covers, turn up my side of the heated pad, pull a dog (a living, little heater) up next to me and sleep the night away.  The only drawback is it forces you to make very quick trips to the bathroom when nature calls during the middle of the night. LOL!  I can't sleep in a warm house so winter is the best.  Do you sleep with the windows open or do you run your heater all night?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Cotton Candy

Today, November 7, is National Cotton Candy Day.  I can't remember the last time I ate some of the melt in your mouth spun sugar.  Here are a few fun facts about this sugary delight:
* Cotton Candy was originally called Fairy Floss
* There is only ONE ingredient in cotton candy - sugar
* There is not even enough sugar to provide the person eating it cavities
*  there is only just as much sugar because there is in a can of soda
* This sweet treat was introduced by four men named Thomas Patton, Josef Delarose Lascaux, John C. Wharton and William Morrison. Morris and Wharton could patent the very first cotton candy machine in 1899.
* Cotton Candy made its major debut at the 1904 World's Fair

SENDING HEXIES

Today I will be sending out hexie flowers to my December swap partner in the Inchy Hexagon Flower Swap.

Marie requested flowers in lilacs or dark red.  I think these two fit that request.  These flowers are headed for Denmark.

CUTE FLOWERS!

I was Melody's December swap partner for the Inchy Hexagon Flower Swap.  She must have received her swap information early because these arrived on the same day that I received the swap information.....

Aren't these flowers adorable?!?!  Both flowers will be wonderful additions to my Grandmother's Flower Garden/I Spy quilt.  Melody also included a piece of fabric that will definitely be made into hexies, some darling buttons, and a pretty handmade card.  Thank you so much, Melody, for everything!!!

WEDNESDAY'S FLOWERS

Over the weekend I created two more flowers of my own......

Since I love to cross stitch I decided to add this bright flower to my collection.  The fabric itself is rather thin but I like the look of the bright orange stitches on the bright pink background.  Can you see the shadow cross stitches in the center?

Do you recognize this fabric?  I made this flower from the fat quarter I won from Barbara.  There are so many I Spy characters all on one flower.  I think my favorite petal is the snake with the funny expression on his face.
To see more hexie flowers out there in blogland, Karen has graciously supplied us with a linky to make browsing so easy.  Just go HERE to look for more flowers.

FAT QUARTERS

Recently I was the lucky winner of Annie's Ruby Slipperz Mystery Monday giveaway where I won 5 fat quarters......

Aren't these gorgeous?  Annie asked what color(s) I would like and I told her I was sadly lacking in oranges and reds.  Each week Annie has a Mystery Monday where you can learn something new and enter her giveaway.  It's lots of fun, and who knows, you could be the next lucky winner of 5 fat quarters.  Thank you, Annie!

TODAY'S GOAL

Today I plan to make a block for December's Bee In Oz hostess.

What is really odd about myself is that I hate to be cold but I can't sleep in a warm room, I like it a little chilly with all the covers on me...strange I know!!

Oh your flowers are just gorgeous. I've never done hexies, but for the past few months have really been noticing them and wanting to try. These just might be what push me over the edge :) And you final thought was wonderful, made me laugh this morning!

The hexies are so cute. I can't wait to see the finished quilt

Enjoyed your post. The hexies are are so cute (and beautiful). The snake's expression is great. You do such a nice job 'fussy cutting'. I think I'll try making fussy cut hexies next year.

I love cotton candy but only have it once a year at the fair and I turn the vents off in my bedroom at night to keep the room cool - not everyone in my house likes it cool.

I can't remember the last time I had cotton candy. Yummmm. we turn down our heat very low at night and I like to snuggle under blankets and cats. Cute flowers!

Thanks for such a fun and entertaining post! Your hexies are wonderful as usual! We had about 1/4" of snow here and I don't like that! But, heat is off at night and dual control heating blanket is on and our two Westie girls are at our feet now! Kim

We are a window open house too!!! These last few nights have been VERY cold here. My summer flowers have frozen. Sad! I can't remember such a cold December.

Did you see where they have a home cotton candy machine available this year? I always loved it as a child.

I LOVE all of the cute hexies!!!! They are going to be perfect in the I Spy collection.

In Aussie we call Cotton Cnady "Fairy Floss". I have not had any in years.

Brrr…I have to have het for sleeping. Hubby likes it colder than me, so there are 3 blankets and a heating pad on my side of the bed!

Thanks for posting about cotton candy! I like it once in a while at baseball games, but only if I have someone to share it with now!

I don’t quit, but I keep seeing these beautiful pieces and fabrics that are making me think about it!

Congratulations, Linda! They are beautiful.

I buy Cotton Candy at the fair every year for the grandkids. (And me!!) We don't turn our heater on, but we do keep the windows closed! How do you do it with the windows open? And yes the trip to the bathroom is quick! I've been wondering if they still make those heated toilet seats.

Becky said...

I giggled on your posts about quick trips to the bathroom. My DH has trouble breathing with the heat running at night. The heat is on during Winter, but at about 55. I too have a heating pad to warm me up. I also have a great supply of flannel pj's.

Your I Spy hexies are too cute.

Thanks for blogging about my giveaway! Have a great evening!

Another good post.love your final thought. Your flowers are beatiful.
I like to sleep under lots of covers with the fan going,DH turn the heat down at night, but high during the day.

We'd freeze here if we turned off the heater. It's supposed to get down into the teens Thursday night. I can't sleep if I'm hot, so, the heater is set to go down really far after 10pm, and not start warming up until 5am, so that we don't freeze on the way to the shower in the mornings. If I still get warm, I just go stand on the cold bathroom floor a few minutes till I cool off.

Isn't Annie a sweetie with her fat quarters?

Debbie said...

at night we do like to sleep cool but we dont turn of the heater. I have a son who doesnt stay under the covers and i only trust PJs so much.

We do turn the heater down to 64 or so at night and 68-70 during the day

I loved making the hexies for you. Have a wonderful weekend.

No I do NOT leave the window open!! The heat goes on the minute it gets chilly. Of course around here its below freezing...but still, even if it's a little chilly the heat goes on. Jerry leaves his window open in his room, and I keep his door shut!

we call it fairy floss here in Aus!
I just love it, like eating little clouds from heaven.
Love all your hexies!

Brrrr..I am not a cold weather girl..but I do love to sleep with my little dog nearby when it is cold! Love your hexies!!

quilterliz said...

G'day. We have our heating on very low on the really cold winter nights. Hubby would freak out if I said I wanted a window open!! I don't like to get to hot and usually throw the covers off, much to hubby's disgust.. I laughed about your "quick" trips to the bathroom. I can relate to that. I just love cotton candy (fairy floss here in Australia) but it has been so many years since I have had any and I can remember the taste of it as I type this. Take care. Liz...

Linda, I love your whimsical Santa! Thanks for the blog hop reminder. It's been fun in the past, think I'll hop on over there.
