Giveaway Day!

There aren't enough days in the weekend.
  ~Rod Schmidt

I'm so glad it's Monday!  We were so busy this weekend that we barely had time to enjoy DH's two days off from work.  We left the house at 9:30 Saturday morning and didn't return until 4:30 except to drop off a few perishables.  DH was kind enough to order dinner delivered from a local Chinese restaurant because I was in no mood to cook.  Sunday started a bit more leisurely as I took my time perusing the local paper.  We spent the rest of the morning wrapping gifts and boxing them in preparation for shipping out this morning.  Added to that was the normal 5 loads of wash and a bit of straightening up and you have the total of our weekend.  I'm looking to a more peaceful and quiet day today!  How was your weekend?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Poinsettia

Today is Poinsettia Day!  All year long there’s hardly a poinsettia to be found, and then suddenly the holiday season rolls around and POOF these bright red plants are showing up in homes and offices all over the country. Here are some fun facts to help you celebrate this day:
* Did you know that the poinsettia's main attraction is not its flowers, but its leaves? The flowers of the plant are the yellow clustered buds in the center. The colored leafy parts are actually bracts or modified leaves.
* Poinsettias come in a variety of colors from red, salmon, and apricot to yellow, cream, and white. There are also unusual speckled or marbled varieties like "Jingle Bells" and "Candy Cane" with several colors blended together.
* Although every state in the United States grows poinsettias commercially, California is the top producer with about 27 million pots grown, followed by Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, and Michigan, each with about 14 million pots.
* Did you know that in the wild, the poinsettia can reach heights of 12 feet with leaves measuring six to eight inches across? It is actually a small tropical tree belonging to the Euphorbia plant family.
* In the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries, the Aztecs used the poinsettia leaves to dye fabric for clothing and the sap for medicinal purposes
* True or False? The poinsettia is a poisonous plant. If you answered false, you're correct. The plant has been tested repeatedly and cleared of this charge by the National Poison Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and the American Medical Association. The POINSINDEX Information Service, the main information resource for poison control centers across the country, reports that even if a 50-pound child consumed more than 500 poinsettia bracts--the amount tested in scientific experiments--the consequences would not be fatal. Even at this high level, no toxicity was found.

MINIS ALL READY FOR GIVING

I finally finished up the two little mini quilts we are giving as a gift to my SIL and BIL.....

First is this snowflake.  I was going to go with a Christmas theme but since the time for decorating will basically be over by the time they open it, I figured I should go with something more neutral like winter.

Then I decided the next holiday to create a mini for was Easter.  What better way to celebrate than with an Easter basket filled with a dyed egg and chocolate bunny.  Both of these little quilts measure 6 1/2 inches square.  They will hang on a table top wire stand.  I found the patterns for the applique at Fat Cat Patterns and shrunk them down to fit on the size block I wanted.  I now need to get these wrapped and in the mail.

We do not have any furry friends. But my favorite animal is an Airdale. We had two of them over the years and they make wonderful pets. Thanks so much for your fabulous giveaway :-)

Purely delightful giveaway. Thanks.

Dh and I agree on liking dogs and what type of dog, too. How unusual is that? We have a mutt about the size of a dalmation named Ruby. She plays with DS, lets him pull her tail and then sleeps with him if he gets scared in the middle of the night.

And even Ruby gets to have a little fun this holiday season, in addition to her stocking hanging on the mantle. We will be dog sitting my SIL's labradoodle for almost a week.

Yes, we have a smooth hair Collie named Sandy. She's wonderful, the best beast we've ever had. She was a rescue, she came to us at 4 yrs old. She sleeps in a queen sized bed, suns herself on a cushioned lounge chair and loves chicken. She's really the best, very affectionate. We're lucky to have found her. ;->

We have two dogs. Lady is a spaniel/terrier cross and is now 17 years and 7 months old, she was rescued at 6 months old so she has been with us for 17 years. Sam is a jack russell who we think is about 11 years old, we are not quite sure of his age as he too is a rescue dog, he has been with us for 10 years. Thanks for the giveaway.

Oh, yes! We have furry friends! Too many for one house, but we love them dearly. Koko (Kao Ko Kung) is our pure-bred Siamese, inhereted from mom and my most beloved teddy bear; Selma, a ROUND-fat calico mama girl; and three of her children: tan/white Clara, black-tortie Boo, and white with orange dusting Marco. Oh! He's now "Cap'n Marco - ARR!" (just had one eye removed because of a mystery disease)

stitchinpenny said...

I have a furry friend - a formerly feral cat named Brie. She has some Siamese in her past since she is colorpointed. That is thanks to the people down the street who abandoned their who male Himalayan cat. He fathered a bunch of kittens, We captured and neutered 12 or 14 and having them around kept the rest of the cat population down. there are only 2 remaining 5 years out and we know that 7 of them died or were killed. One was adopted by a family down the street. Spay and neuter folks!

We don't have any furry friends at the moment, but there is a Siamese cat in my daughter's future, and I want a yellow lab named Stella someday. Just so I can stand at the front door and do my best Marlon Brando impersonation when I call her home at night.

No pets for me ... I like cats, but they don't like me (allergies!) which reminds me, I'd better start dosing myself before I go visit my parents for Christmas (2 cats, 2 dogs, 4 kids with allergies, and a medicine cabinet well stocked for visitors)

When the kids were growing up we ALWAYS had cats. LIving on a farm on a busy highway, they rotated nearly every year if you catch my drift..
Once they (the kids) left home, I vowed no more animals...I've got enough to do. We only have my daughter's dog now until she is finished school and gets her own place....hope it's soon. She is home for Christmas; got in today, and said she almost brought me a kitten! Yikes..I am not the old person needing a lap pet kind of person....enough!

I am not an animal adorer but I do adore baking cutout cookies in all shapes and sizes, including fuzzy animals! I helped a friend pick out fabrics for a baby blanket recently and some of the the fabrics in your charm pack went into that baby blanket. I really like the blues and browns together. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Linda, we have 2 rescue cats, Dutch and Mindy, who have been our furry friends since 2000; they moved 1300 miles with us by car to Florida -- and yes, we took the trip in five days, with motel stops, so that it would not be too much for them! We think they are 15 or 16 and 15 or 14 years old. We also have an outside (patio) cat named Callie whom we got neutered and then placed in a good hom...she had been a feral cat. After 2 weeks, she ran away from her new home, and was never seen there again. We were frantic! Six days later, and 10 blocks and one highway later, she staggered up our sidewalk, hungry and tired and telling me every step of the way that she was HOME, whether I liked it or not!(We feel blessed that she chose us!) Our latest addition, named Thelma by our neighbor, was abandoned as a young kitten only able to drink milk, on our doorstep...totally unequiped to deal with the feral cats in our area, which makes us believe that she must have come from a "real" home. Since being invited into our apartment on a very cold winter night, she has never asked to go out again. Those of us who have furry friends are so very fortunate!

Karen O said...

Our rescue cat found us 4 years ago and adopted us. He was almost starved and wounded from the feral cats. He was someone's pet already as he is declawed and neutered. But nobody claimed him from our ads. His name is Smokey, and I call him my cat/dog. He has to greet everyone and have them pet him. And he is a great mouser which is handy this time of year.

Hi Linda! Yes we do have furry friends in our house...well, they allow us to live in their house actually. *wink* Their names are Fraulein Friskie, a little purbred Schnauzer who is coming to the end of her time with us. She has been such a joy but her health is becoming very fragile so we a cherishing every moment of joy, love and laughter we have with her. Her sister is a Schnauzer Poodle mix that we rescued from a brutely abusive home. She was 15 months old when we got her and the vet did not know if she could be saved. But now, 7 years later, she is a happy, healthy...albeit...chubby girl who is a bundle of love wrapped in fur. She even allows us to sit on her couch sometimes, LOL. Thanks for a chance to win some beautiful quilting gifts. Hugs...
