It's Party Time!

The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
~Burton Hillis

Every time I look at the calender I'm a little surprised how close Christmas is.  I think I have all of my shopping done and am only waiting on a few more things to be delivered.  Next I have all the wrapping to do.  Hopefully I will get some wrapping done this weekend - at least the ones that need to be sent to our daughter's family in New Mexico.  We thought about having Amazon wrap the packages and then have them sent directly to her but it was going to cost around $60 to have that done and then there were a couple that wouldn't be wrapped because they were being shipped directly from the seller. (Wow, that sentence was way too long - lol!)   I think we can beat that price in shipping alone.  Maybe I can convince DH to help with the wrapping - he does a beautiful job.  Are all of your gifts wrapped, sent and/or under the tree?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Christmas Cards

Today is Christmas Card Day!
Christmas Cards originally started as letters sent from school children to their families around the holidays. Christmas Cards as we know them today began to be seen after the invention of the steam press in the 1840s.
The first cards printed in England specifically for use at Christmas were designed by John Horsley in 1843 and were sold at Felix Summerly's Home Treasury Office. They featured the greeting, "A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You."
The first signs of people mailing cards to each other in the United States occurred around 1845. Until 1875 Americans had to import their Christmas Cards from Europe, but in 1875 that changed when a German immigrant by the name of Louis Prang published the first line of U.S. Christmas Cards.

DECEMBER FINALLY FINISHED

I finally finished my December mini quilt and was able to put Mr Turkey away......

Santa was a fun little quilt to make.  It ended up measuring 12 1/2" X 12 1/2".  His cheeks are supposed to be rosy and created with crayons but I don't have any crayons in the house :(  This is a pattern from Count On It by Nancy Halvorsen.  Santa is hanging on his wire stand ready to greet everyone who enters our home.

IT'S BLOG HOP PARTY TIME!

This giveaway is now closed!

Michele over at Quilting Gallery has organized a great Blog Hop Party again this year.  Last I looked, there were over 200 participants!  That's a lot of giveaways!  I'm participating, too.  What am I giving away?  Well, how about........

A Connecting Threads table runner kit!  The pattern is called Louisa May Table Runner and measures 16" X 32".  Included with the pattern is.......

this gorgeous assortment of fabric.  There are five fat quarters (hmmmm....I see one didn't get in the picture but it is in the package) plus two 1/2 yard cuts of the fabric on the right.  This is enough fabric to make the completed table runner - top, bottom and binding.

How can you win?  Simple!  Just leave me one comment telling me what you will be serving for Christmas dinner.  My answer would be - "I don't serve Christmas dinner.  We always go over to my SIL's and I ALWAYS bring the fruit salad ambrosia".

RULES
1.  Only one comment per person.
2.  You must leave me a way to contact you.  If you are a No-Reply blogger, then please leave your email address in  your comment.  If I can't reach you, you CAN NOT win.  If you are unsure if you are No-Reply blogger, check out the info in my left sidebar.
3. This giveaway is open to everyone - yes, that means internationally.
3.  This giveaway will end on Saturday, December 17, at 4:00 pm PST.  The winner will be announced on Sunday, December 18, no later than noon.

After you have entered my giveaway, remember to click on the link above or HERE to take you to all of the other giveaways.  The list of links will be available Saturday morning, shortly after midnight.  Happy blog hopping!!

We'll be having Thanksgiving leftovers with a fried turkey. I'm getting my husband a oiless turkey fryer and I'm going to put him to work

Donna said...

I eat at my sister's. She serves steaks on Christmas eve and ham with all the trimmings on Christmas day.

Kasey said...

Love the Santa! I'll be making a pineapple-glazed ham, cheesy potato casserole (known in our family as Grandma's spuds), veggies, fudge, and Christmas cookies to take to my husband and his coworkers who will be working Christmas Eve. I hate the idea of my husband or anyone not having a good meal on Christmas Eve, so I bring it to them!

sunny said...

I can send you a couple of crayons! We're having Prime RIb for Christmas, which is great because hubby is cooking!! My shopping is finished, but nothing else. It will be a very busy weekend at our house.

krisgray said...

Our families are converging at our house in St. Louis, the Gateway City. SInce my mom served ham for T-giving, DH insists that we have turkey and all the traditional stuff for Christmas. However, we will have fewer starches and more green vegetables than tradition call for!

I have to get my grandma a tea kettle. Other than a few little gifts for the grandparents that we say are from DS, we are done, but not wrapped! Since I am in charge of cleaning, DH will be doing most of the wrapping.

I also can't believe Christmas is so close! That Santa mini quilt is adorable (even without the cheeks :) ) - great job!

Love the mini quilt! I am so fortunate that my daughter and son-in-law will be with us at home for Christmas! We traveled for Christmas in 2009 and 2010 to be with DD when she lived six hours away. Last year, DD spent Christmas with her husband's family, so this will be a treat. I will serve smoked turkey (hubby's specialty), dressing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce, and mandarin orange salad (the one made with vanilla pudding, buttermilk, Cool Whip, and fudge striped cookies). For dessert, we will Italian cream cake. Yum!

I love table runners & that's the perfect size for my wooden kitchen table.

You ask me what I'm cooking for christmas? Are you trying to stress me out? I'm a terrible cook. Can I order take-out from Jack-n-the-box? Seriously, I'll come up with something to cook, before Christmas, but the menu planning stresses me out right now. Hmm. How about turkey? We went to friend for Thanksgiving, so I miss left over turkey.

I don't cook for Christmas either. Stopped when I noticed I was always stuck in the kitchen while the kids and their dad got to play with all their new stuff and interact...I was missing it all! After that, I started a new tradition of sticky buns for breakfast, fry up some ham and eggs for lunch and maybe leftover meatpie from our Christmas Eve. Nice easy Christmas Day!
All the kids are gone now and not everyone comes home except the unmarrieds most of the time...might have to restart the cooking a big meal for them....Christmas Day can be long now that there are no things to build or put together....:)

Christmas being on Sunday this year, whatever my hubby decides to make for the evening supper is what will be served. I don't make meals on weekends....lol

Turkey dinner with all the usual fixings (doing almost everything except the turkey ahead of time!) at my mom's where I will do most of the work with my grown daughter as mom lately having mobility problems :( (I have her genes too with 3 joints replaced now - practically bionic!)Btw - for your Santa's cheeks - blush from your makeup works wekk too I've found! Happy Holidays and thanks!

Lovely Santa mini-quilt!
Even without the rosy cheeks.
Christmas dinner here will be baked salmon served with red cabbage salad with horseradish and apples, and steamed carrots with orange juice sauce. Simple, but turning into a tradtion in my house.

Debi said...

I won't be serving dinner, but going to my brother's for fondue!

Kathy H said...

I will be serving roast chicken for dinner and appetizers for lunch. No one wants to eat a big meal then. I like how your santa turned out.

Not sure what we're making for Christmas - every year it's different and this is our first year of hosting so we have to decide!

The table runner is absolutely gorgeous!!! Thanks for the chance to win.
For Christmas dinner we're having roast turkey and stuffing, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes and gravy and dessert will either be Christmas pudding or Pavlova (undecided just yet).

SJSM said...

We are doing something different this year. My DD and SIL are vegetarian and want to make roasted beet pasta with beet greens with cheese. They said it not only is good but a spectacular presentation in reds and greens. I'll add a ham on the side for DH and me. Not a traditional dish but truly a pretty one.

supersara20 said...

The family has not ironed out the meal yet but probably ham and all the southern sides!

Heather said...

Probably ham cause it is easy and everyone likes it. Lots of sides and then bring on the cookies.

foodmathquilts said...

I'm not hosting Christmas this year, but I'll be bringing fudge everywhere I go! One dish that MUST be on the table is "Aunt Rheda's Cranberry Salad". Chopped fresh cranberries and celery in cherry jello. I don't think I ever met Aunt Rheda though, she was either my grandfather's aunt, or his great aunt! However _my_ great aunt typed up the recipe to share about 20 years ago, and my mom recreates it faithfully every year. It is a great substitute for cranberry sauce!

Heading to my son's for Christmas....chili, tamales..two days of food and 13 deserts...giggle.

Lisa Cox said...

I haven't decided what to cook for Christmas yet, but it will probably be the traditional roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. That's a huge meal to make for just 2 people, isn't it?

Carolyn said...

It will be just my hubby and I so we usually just do snacky kinds of things on Christmas day. It's such a lazy day for us, so no big holiday meal. We love it!

Thanks for the giveaway! :0)

Leslie C said...

Christmas Eve and our house, and this year it is Sauerbraten! (a little weird, I know). Also, potato pancakes and red cabbage. Yay!!!

Michelle said...

I'm with you I don't serve Christmas dinner! Thanks for the chance to win.

Cheri said...

Christmas Eve will be alaskan king crab legs--Yumm!!!

Bailey said...

Well, I haven't really planned that far ahead, we're not even sure where we're going or who we're having over. With 4 sets of parents between my husband and I, the holidays are a bit hectic that way.

Kay Stephenson said...

LOL! I haven't been able to think nearly that far ahead. Knowing my husband and the fact that we live in the south, it will probably involve something that can be grilled (beef) or smoked (turkey?). Whatever it will be, since I only have to make dessert and sides I'm happy.

Nanbon44 said...

I like serving Ham, but we also serve Turkey and a roast beef for our Jewish friends.

Melinda said...

I think we will have ham with lots of veggies plus cheesy potatoes.

That is the BIG question! I hate to cook so I usually wait until the last minute to deside, but we will probably have a glazed ham with all the trimmings. Sounds good, doesn't it? Hi Linda

I will be cooking dinner down at my Mom's this year. Being the bossy daughter helps in delegating who brings what (this will include all my favorite of their cooking skills).
In honor and memory of my Daddy, I will be making a fresh coconut cake as one of the desserts.

Your projects always leave me feeling refreshed, inspired, tired and a wee bit lazy.

Merry Christmas, dear one. God bless,
Blondie

We will have a more Asian meal - stringhopper pillau (which is similar to noodles but finer!) roast chicken, roast pork, salads, and most importantly desserts!

Pat said...

I fix a corn casserole that I don't usually take time to make except at holidays. (Yum!) And an easy crustless pumpkin pie. And an easy oil-crust pecan pie. (Okay, it took me 30+ years to figure out how to make gravy, you don't expect me to learn how to make pie crust, too?!?!)

Merry Christmas to all!

Pat

I usually bake a ham with wine, brown sugar, marchino cherries and pineapple. Everybody else brings side dishes. I love your Santa. Honey, you need to keep crayons around :0) I love to color with my grandchildren. For their Christmas stockings I purchased cryaon rocks from Amazon.com. I thought they might work better for little fingers. Love your blog! Merry Christmas!

Roast Turkey dinner, with green vegies, mashed potates, dressing ( my DH makes the very best dressing - more like an old fashioned english meat pudding) and shrimp salad. Pecan and Mincemeat Pies.

Hubby and I do a lot with our church's music program, so we have our family Christmas on a different weekend close to Christmas and are usually very tired come Christmas day. If we are home, I will usually try to make something special that we both enjoy, but this year, we are invited to have dinner with friends. I will bring a side dish...not sure what yet...depends on what our hostess wants me to make. Very nice giveaway. I love to make table runners!

I'm serving Alton Brown's City Ham recipe - my family absolutely loves it and since I started making it for them about 6 or 7 years ago, they will not let me serve anything else :-)

Your Santa is adorable!!! What a generous giveaway, I would very much appreciate winning it :-)

Merry Christmas!!

Cat said...

Thanks for such a beautiful kit; very generous of you.
Serving: frozen pizza if I don't get off this blog-hop; I haven't made it through half of them yet. I still have gifts to buy, baking to do, projects to finish. My sister-in-law actually always orders pizza or makes a frozen one EVERY holiday, she doesn't cook! Not kidding, they live out-of-state or I'd have them over.
Seriously for us: always a turkey, BBQ ribs for my boys, mashed potatoes, dressing, green bean casserole, homemade bread, greens salad, pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie, cookies (variety). Mostly traditional.

Judi said...

Haha. Now there's a good question. I haven't thought about it yet. We will probably go over to my mother in law's but she is notorious for waiting until the last minute to let us know we're invited. If we stay here, I have a prime rib roast in the freezer that we will make. (I bought it for Thanksgiving, thinking we didn't have plans, and then the day before my mother in law finally invited us over - ha.)

Love the table runner pattern and fabrics.

Wow Linda, This table topper kit is GORGEOUS, I would love to have a chance to win it. My answer to Christmas dinner is somewhat like yours...I don't cook on Christmas day because I think it is a day to relax and enjoy family stopping by as they make their busy rounds to visit with all the families and friends they hop around to. So...we get a large meat and cheese deli tray at our local grocer and it is delicious. We buy tasty rolls, add a variety of chips and my daughter brings home made potato salad and this year a cheesecake, also home made. We sit out the paper plates, and plastic wear so there are no dishes, sodas, sport drinks and water in the fridge. Everyone helps themselves as they please and it is a delightful day for everyone. Most of the grand kids come by twice because they love the sandwiches, LOL. Thanks so much for a chance to win this lovely kit. Hugs...
