It's a Day Full of Flowers

Just remember, there's a right way and a wrong way to do everything and the wrong way is to keep trying to make everybody else do it the right way.
  ~M*A*S*H, Colonel Potter

I haves so many projects that I want to work on!  I have the fabrics and the patterns.  And what do I end up doing?  Procrastinating!  I don't know if it's because I have several I want to start or becomes of other commitments that keep coming up.  I really need to get started on a couple of them as I have hopes on entering them in our guild's 2014 quilt show and at least two of the quilts are very detailed.  I have two Loving Hands quilts to make, a doll swap quilt to make, and Thursday will be a computer day preparing June swap partners for Block Swap Adventure.  See there!  I've already puttered away several days and still haven't started on any of my major projects.  Does this ever happen to you?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Solar System

Did any of you notice the solar eclipse we had on Sunday?  That got me to thinking about the solar system - something I haven't studied since grade school.  Here are a few facts about our wonderful solar system...
The solar system includes the Sun and all the objects that orbit around it due to its gravity. This includes things such as planetscometsasteroidsmeteoroids and moons.
The Solar System formed around 4.6 billion years ago.
There are eight planets in the Solar System. The four inner planets are MercuryVenusEarth and Mars while the four outer planets are JupiterSaturnUranus and Neptune.
The inner planets (also known as terrestrial planets) are smaller and made mostly of rock and metal.
The outer planets (also known as gas giants) are much larger and made mostly of hydrogen, helium and other gases.
As of 2008, there are also five dwarf planets: Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea.  (When I was growing up, Pluto was considered a planet).
For thousands of years humans were unaware of the Solar System and believed that Earth was at the center of the Universe.
* Mercury takes 59 days to make a rotation but only 88 days to circle the Sun.   That means that there are fewer than 2 days in a year!  Many astronomers believe that Mercury might be the core of what was once a much larger planet -- it appears to be a huge ball of iron covered by a thin layer of rock.
Mars is the home of "Olympus Mons", the largest volcano found in the solar system.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, but it spins very quickly on its axis.  A day on Jupiter lasts only 9 hours and 55 minutes.
The ring that surrounds Saturn could be the remnants of a moon that was shattered by Saturn's gravity.
Neptune was discovered in 1846 (over 150 years ago).  Since that time it has only orbited around the sun once, because one Neptune year lasts 165 Earth years

ONE FLOWER WEDNESDAY

I didn't get any flowers made for myself but I did get two flowers made for my Inchy Hexagon Flower Swap partner, Linda Mc.  I originally had made two other flowers until I double checked the roster and found out I had made flowers for someone else.

Linda requested red, taupe, or brown civil war fabrics with a cream center.  I'm never sure what 'civil war' fabrics exactly means so I'm hoping these fit that description.  I know the colors are right - lol!  These should be reaching Linda shortly, if she hasn't received them already.
To see more hexagon flowers, Karen has provided a linky for One Flower Wednesday that you may access HERE.

BEAUTIFUL DOLL QUILT

Monday I received a beautiful little doll quilt from my Doll Quilt Swap partner, Diane W.

Isn't is gorgeous! Diane couldn't have selected better colors for my living room if she tried.  And she included a special little card that she created.  This wonderful quilt now resides on my living room table.  Diane also added a hanging sleeve so that I could use it that way, too.  Thank you so very much, Diane, for making Monday's mail so enjoyable.

TODAY'S GOAL

Today I will work on next month's 2 Loving Hands quilts.

I love your facts about the solar system, my son is MAJORLY into the solar system, he'll tell you why venus is hotter than mercury, even though mercury is closer to the sun. last year for his science project, he walked around and asked our neighbors what they thought happened to pluto since it's not a planet anymore, we got some FUN answers, only 1 out of maybe 12 got it right. I made him a solar system quilt two years ago that glows in the dark, yesterday I found a PJ pattern and a sample in the quilt store had outer space fabric, it was so cute, I HAD to have the pattern, then I saw a 3D fabric with space and ufo's where you wear the glasses and they really pop out, pretty cool! I didn't get the fabric though, I don't like ufos.

I don't think you are alone - I can think of so many things that I want to do and when I get off work I get home and don't know where to start. So I think alot of us are that way

I set up the monthly must do's on one shelf - and they get tackled first - other projects get set up on the next shelf (or two) in pretty baskets or tins with labels - then I can pull them when time allows - work a little mark card with next step - everything at a glance. ANd it doesn't hurt to do some play time fun (and that doesn't have to be sewing) - it rejuvinates. Yes, your hexies look Civil War - nicely done..

What a beautiful little doll quilt!
I read that one blogger I follow (sorry, don't remember which it was!) does a "lottery" for finishing her WIP. She assigns each a number to each and draws a number to see which she will work on.
I, on the other hand, always have about three or four going on at the same time and I jump from one to the other constantly!

Linda, it's annoying not to be able to get to ALL the projects we want! Yes, I know that feeling... Just take a breath, & perhaps get started on the project you most want to do. The flowers you've made are lovely, your swap partner will be happy I'm sure... x

I think that we all encounter those problems. I try so hard to not over commit myself in swaps so I can get some sewing done here and it never works out. It is especially hard to start a project when you only have a short period of time for sewing too.

Your doll quilt is just darling. I'll bet that was a thrill to receive.

I hope you get some sewing time in today.

I'm with you Linda, I'm not quite sure if fabrics are civil war or not. I just blame it on our area - not too many of those quilts around. You're pretty good at getting a lot done, I'm sure you'll succeed in getting the quilts made for the guild show. (Can't wait to see them!)

I think many of us do this Linda, I know I do. I started several large quilts at the same time and have realized I need to break it up with small "quick finish" projects so I feel like I am accomplishing something!

Your Solar System information was right in step for me today.....I have been watching ALL the Transformer Movies with my Grandson! As you may or may not have noticed...I am late on my OFW today....I had some fabric shipped to my son's house and am waiting for it to arrive.....I think your flowers will definitely work for "Civil War" fabrics......:)

Still not getting the e-mail updates, and it still won't let me resub. =P I'm going to have to figure out something. I'm a big CW fan, and I'd say those two are close enough, if not actual repros of the time. They'd fit in with any reproduction fabrics, at least.

Beautiful doll quilt!! I know what you mean about procrastination. All day at work I think about what I want to get done when I get home. BUt by the time dinner and dishes are done, I just want to sit and relax. Fortunately, there are always hand projects next to my comfy chair, but I'm sure my sewing machine is getting lonely in the basement.

It happens to me all the time! lol. Lovely flowers and a beautiful doll quilt.

G'day Linda. You couldn't have put it better about the procrastinating. I know the feeling and there never seems to be enough time through the day to get things done, let alone any sewing!!! Love the story on the Solar System, very informative and that little quilt is just gorgeous. Take care. Liz...

It must have been that eclipse - that is just how I feel - so much to do and feel I am just stalling. Very cute little quilt. Just darling. And your hexie flowers are so cute too.
