It's definitely warming up here in my corner of the world.  And it's doing it a little bit too fast for my taste.  After all, we had highs in the low 50's at the end of last week and now they are forecasting 90 degrees for Saturday.  I think if will feel more like 110 degrees after such a rapid climb.  There has been nothing normal about our spring so far so I don't know why I expect the temperatures to be normal - lol!  I'll just stay inside and, if necessary, turn on the fans while I sew the hours away.  I'm not looking forward to the summer heat making its appearance and then refusing to leave.  Oh well, thank goodness for the good ol' AC!

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Worms

Does the sight of worms send your skin to crawling?  I remember as a child enjoying having a worm crawl around on my hand.  They are wonderful for the garden and make great fishing bait (and, yes, I put worms on my hook myself).  Here are a few facts about worms:

* A worm has no eyes, legs or arms

* There are 2700 different types of earthworms in the world

* There can be up to 1 million earthworms in just 1 acre of land.

* The sticky slime a worm makes helps keep it from drying out. If the worm dries out, it will die, because it ‘breathes’ through it’s skin.

* A single worm has both male and female parts. This is called a ‘hermaphrodite.’ But they still need a mate to reproduce.

* Some of the largest worms can live to be 50 years old.  Regular earthworms can live 15 years.

* A worm chopped in half will not become 2 worms. Just the head end will regenerate into a new worm.

* The largest earthworm ever found was in South Africa and measured 22 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail.

* Baby worms are not born. They hatch from cocoons smaller than a grain of rice.

ONE FLOWER WEDNESDAY

During my week off, I didn't find time to make any hexie flowers for myself  for One Flower Wednesday, but I did make two for my swap partner.

Karyli, my April swap partner for The Inchy Hexagon Flower Swap, requested yellow petals with black centers.  I checked with her before using a print on the petals and she said that would be fine. I went with bananas and bumblebees.  I tried to make sure the traveling lines on the bee petals matched going from one petal to the next.  These were fun flowers to make and I hope that Karyli likes them.

LOVING HANDS QUILT

This little quilt for Loving Hands has been completed for a couple of weeks.

I will be turning this in Thursday evening when I attend my guild meeting.  I used the same block pattern, Squares Upon Squares, that I used to make the pink one.  I really like how this pattern worked up and will definitely be using it for future Loving Hands quilts.  Sorry for the darkness of the photo but it didn't show up well in bright sun light so I went with the photo in the shade.

I'm back and ready to return to blogging.  There are times when I just need a break - especially when blogging seems more like a chore and hard work than something I enjoy.  The beginning of the week was spent down in Oceanside where we shared Easter with my BIL and his wife, our niece, and our DD#2 and her hubby.  Lots of good food and great times with family.  Tuesday night was not for sleeping.  Our other miniature dachshund, Snickerdoodle, had me up every 45 minutes to an hour either with vomiting or diarrhea.  Definitely not fun for her or for me.  DH took her to the vet first thing in the morning and she was diagnosed with Pancreatitus.  We have no idea what caused this as she gets absolutely no table scraps.  An overnight stay at the vets with IV's brought her around and we brought her home Thursday.  She is on bland food for now and is slowly returning to her energetic self.  Other than that, my week was fairly quiet and allowed me to get in a bit of stitching, sewing, and quilting.  I hope you all had a wonderful week!

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Goats

I have always been drawn to goats at the petting zoos.  If I had the land, I think I would own a pygmy goat or two.  Here are some fun facts about these curious creatures:

*  The proper name for a group of goats is a trip

* Goats are great swimmers

* Goats were domesticated around 7000 B.C.

* Each breed of dairy goat gives a different tasting milk. Oberhasli goats give milk that tastes closest to cow's milk

* Goat's discovered coffee beans

* Goats have only bottom front and side teeth, the top jaw does have a large back molar for crushing things

* Goats have rectangular eyes - this allows them to see very well in the dark

* They can live anywhere from eight to twelve years

* Contrary to popular belief, goats have sensitive stomachs and are therefore very picky eaters

A QUILT SHOW IN LINDSAY

Saturday we traveled up the valley to the small town of Lindsay to visit a quilt show put on by a committee of quilt lovers from Tulare and Kings Counties called Best Of The Valley.  This was their 17th annual show.  It is a juried show and there were certainly some gorgeous quilts to see.  Here are just a few of them...

"Benediction" by Linda S. Schmidt.

This was a stunning quilt!  It was machine appliqued and home machine quilted.  It was the winner for the Best Use Of Color.

"Floral Fantasy" by Molly Hamilton McNally and Cindy Seitz-Krug

The reverse applique was just amazing.  This quilt is both machine pieced and hand appliqued.  

Here is a close up of the quilting.  Would  you believe this was done on a home machine?  This is the quilting of my dreams :)

"Wish Upon A Star" by Sharon Sholta

I have seen this pattern but it is the first time I've seen it in person.  Gorgeous colors and definitely one of my favorites.  Machine pieced and professionally long arm quilted

"Bok Choy" by Kay Pennington

The subtle colors in this made this quilt just sparkle.  And, for all of you who love to make string blocks, pay particular attention to the border.  This wall quilt was machine pieced and appliqued.  The stems are hand painted silk.

"Starry Rings" by Judie Fleming

Lots of beautiful batiks were used in this table runner.  Machine pieced and home machine quilted.

"Back On The Farm" by Marla Roach

I just love this pattern and this quilt was so well done that it was definitely on my favorites list.  This was machine pieced and hand appliqued with fusible web.  The long arm quilting was done professionally.

"Crazy Chicken Love" by DeAnn Farris

There was a story behind this quilt:  My husband, Kelvin, loves chickens.  I asked him to draw me a love story.  The story goes:  Love At First Sight, The Courtship, Sitting On The Nest, and voila!"  The chickens on this were what made the quilt - just adorable!  Machine pieced and hand painted.  The quilting was computer-assisted long arm.

"Piecing The Trail To Kansas" by Carletta Emitte

Sorry for the blurry picture but I thought you Primitive Quilters would be interested in this quilt.  Simple but great use of colors and arrangement of blocks.  Machine pieced, hand applique, hand embroidered.  The quilting was done both by hand and home machine.

"In A Pickle" by Cindy Seitz-Krug

This was my husbands absolute favorite.  He definitely has a thing for batiks - lol!  Machine pieced and home machine quilted.

"Mosaic Mariner" by CeCe Westerfield

I really like the color and movement in this quilt.  This was machine pieced and long arm quilted.

I hope you enjoyed this sampling of the quilt show.  It was such a nice trip up and down the valley because everything is so green.  We did have a mishap with the windshield wipers but at least the driver's side still worked in the brief downpours we encountered.  A day enjoyed with my husband!

It's Good Friday and Easter is just a couple days away.  Spring has sprung and the weather readers promise it will be a gorgeous day.  However, we are still riding the wild roller coaster of spring with our low down to near freezing this morning and a predicted high on Monday of 81 degrees.  I think Mother Nature is going through menopause with these hot flashes and is taking it out on all of us - lol!  We will be spending Easter with family and look forward to a feast of wonderful food.  Do you have plans for Easter?  Will the Easter Bunny be leaving a basket of sweets for someone in your family?

Sunday is Easter.  For some it is a religious holiday.  For others it's a day to give and receive baskets of candy.  For some, it's both.  What will your Easter baskets be filled with this year?  Here are some fun facts about what you may fill your basket with:

* 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year.

* 16 billion jelly beans are made for Easter (that’s enough to completely fill an 89 feet high and 60 feet wide plastic Easter egg – about the height of a nine-story office building!)

* 63 percent of Americans would most like to receive a chocolate bunny on Easter morning, followed by marshmallow bunnies (10 percent)

* According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25-ft high and made of chocolate and marshmallow. The egg weighed 8,968 lbs. and was supported by an internal steel frame.

A NEW PROJECT

Last week I started a new counted cross stitch project.  You may ask why when I haven't finished the Summer Sampler.  This new piece is a Christmas present and I don't want to have the pressures of the holidays to get it finished.

I'm not too sure about the colors in this one but hopefully I will like it better when more of it is completed.  I rarely start stitching in the center of a pattern but the way this one is presented (in bits and pieces) it's necessary.  See that top area with the teal colored stitches?  I had to unstitch that entire area last night because I realized that I had used too light of blue for the background.  Luckily, I was able to get a few rows of the teal in before it was time for bed.  The pattern calls for several silk threads but I can't afford them at this time so am substituting DMC floss.  Same goes for the beads.

Fabric:  Antique White Belfast (linen - for those of you who do not stitch)

Stitched:  2 strands of DMC floss over 2 threads

I have added something new to my cross stitch necessities.  A magnifier.  The pattern is a pdf file and the print out is so small I have trouble seeing some of the symbols.  I have enlarged it as far as possible without making the symbols blurry beyond recognition.  Normally I like working from a black and white pattern the best, however, I am working from the color pattern (both are provided) as this seems to help a bit.  I didn't start working with the color pattern until after I had stitched the top center section and, as I stated above, I started with the wrong color when reading the black and white chart.  Error discovered and fixed - luckily before I had completed anything more.

TWO BLOCKS AND A PATTERN

Karen P was my March swap partner for Quilting Block Swaps Australia.  She made me two wonderful blocks  "to make up for my tardiness".  In reality, they weren't late (they arrived on the 31st) but I will gladly accept two blocks.  I just love the alligator and gecko prints Karen used to create these two adorable blocks.  Karen and I both joined in the first ever pattern swap for the swap group.  She sent me a darling little backpack pattern that she says she has made several times.  Thank you so very much for the darling blocks and cute pattern, Karen!

The days just seem to keep flying by and there's so many things I want to do!  I have several projects that I would like to start but am refraining until I've finished a couple of the ones I'm currently working on.  I'm taking a class through Craftsy on paper piecing that actually gives you projects to make.  This is fun and I'm learning some good ideas that I hadn't tried before.  It's always fun to learn something new.  Are you in the process of learning something new or are you happy right where you are?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Porcupine

Have you ever encountered a porcupine?  I haven't and hope never I never do.  They are quite interesting looking creatures and don't seem to be too much of a threat when they are lumbering around.  Here are some facts I found about porcupines:

* The term “porcupine” means: “the one that rises in anger.”

* Known as master-climbers, porcupines have strong legs, curved claws and flat paws, which are all very useful in climbing trees. Some of them can even use their strong tails for this purpose.

* Porcupines do not hibernate. Their homes are called dens.

* Porcupines are herbivores, which means they do not eat meat and feed mainly on leaves, thistles, weeds, the bark of tress, pine needles, etc. They use their sharp, strong teeth to chew through the hard wood and the seeds; they use their long incisors to peel off the bark of trees.

* Their babies are born with soft quills that harden in a few hours. In about six months, after they have learned to survive on their own, they are ready to leave their mother’s side.

* In the past, Native Americans used the porcupines’ quills to decorate clothes and moccasins or ashairpins. The porcupines were an important source of food as well.

* Some people believe the porcupines to be dangerous animals, but in reality, these shy beings can be very useful to other living creatures. Feeding mostly on common tree species, they ensure a better natural lighting in thick woods by chewing off leaves from the trees’ foliage. Sometime they may tumble down from trees, because their sight is not very good.

WHERE WOULD I BE WITHOUT ONE FLOWER WEDNESDAY?

I would probably lost and with not many flowers made without One Flower Wednesday.  But this is another week, and I've made two hexie flowers for One Flower Wednesday.....

There certainly is a lot of blue in this flower.  The bees are busy in my garden so they might as well appear on my hexie flower too.

More blue!  Must have been the day I selected the fabrics to make the flowers this week - lol!  All those kitties dressed up in the party best just waiting for the poor little mouse to make his next move.

Saturday was a whirlwind of errand running.  We even visited two local quilt stores where I bought a small amount of fabric - some for future hexie flowers and a fat quarter pack that I just couldn't resist of dark batiks.  Sunday was spent washing the dog, doing laundry, watching (well, I listened) to the Nascar race, and I even managed to get a bit of stitching in.  This week promises to be a little quieter and hopefully I will get something accomplished in the sewing room.  How is your week starting out?

LITTLE FACT OF THE DAY

Salt and Pepper

Salt and pepper are a mainstay on most of our tables and in our cooking.  Of the two, salt is definitely a favorite with me.  Here are a few interesting facts on this duo:

* In the Middle Ages, salt was so expensive it was sometimes referred to as “white gold”.

* Black pepper is the number one selling spice in America.

* Consuming too much salt can have fatal outcomes. 1 gm of salt consumed per kilogram of body weight is capable of drawing a person to death.

* Most black pepper is grown in India, Indonesia, Brazil, and Vietnam.

* In India, the hard seeds are mixed with salts to produce the black salt of India. This mixture is allowed to stand for certain period to form the lumps of black salt.

* Peppercorns grow on a vine supported by a stake or host tree. A pepper vine can grow to lengths of 100 feet. The plant requires three years to mature and produce peppercorns, but the vines will continue to be fruitful for years.

* The towns with names ending with either “lick”, “saal” or “wich” are all founded because of the availability of the salt.

* Americans consumed more than 112 million pounds of pepper last year, an increase of nearly 80 percent during the past two decades.

* Out of the total salt production, only 7% is diverted towards the human consumption while the remaining 93% is used by the manufacturing and chemical industry.

DOLL QUILT SWAP

Last week I completed and mailed my first doll quilt to my swap partner....

The theme for the month of April for Doll Quilters Monthly was 3 Colors.  My swap partner, Margaret, requested orange, purple, and lime green - the brighter the better.  I think this fits that description.  I used the Disappearing 9 Patch for the block.  For the quilting I did some stitch-in-the-ditch and then used a fancy stitch from my machine to do some diagonal quilting.  The final quilt measures 17.5" X 17.5".  This went out in the mail on Friday so Margaret should have it shortly.  I hope she likes it.

SWAP BLOCK

This month my swap partner for Block Swap Adventure was Rachelle.  

Rachelle requested the Rail Fence block made up in jewel or winter tones.  The colors in the block are much deeper than they appear in the photo so that it fits the jewel tone request.  This block went out in Friday's mail so Rachelle should have it fairly soon.
