Think Spring Giveaway!

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
 ~Victor Hugo

I'm very much a music kind of gal.  I would rather listen to music than TV.  Don't give that rap stuff or hard rock - well, unless it's Jimi Hendrix and then he's probably not considered heavy rock for today.  I can get lost listening to sound tracks from movies.  Movies like Cider House Rules (Rachel Portman), The Horse Whisperer (Thomas Newman), and Star Wars (John Williams).  Or give me classicals like Dvorak, Beethoven, or Brahms.  I love the piano, especially George Winston or a good trumpet piece by Winton Marsalis.  Don't care for jazz, never understood it.  I grew up on opera and can name a lot of the arias when I hear them, but I would rather not listen to it.  Music can be electrifying or totally calming.  It can be hypnotic or invigorating.  Give me music any day!!!

PHOTO FACT OF THE DAY

Toothbrush

We use a toothbrush several times a day.  Brush those pearly whites or lose them.  Have you ever wondered how the tooth brush came about?  Hard to believe, but most Americans didn't brush their teeth until soldiers brought the Army's enforced habit back home from World War II.  The early history and evolution of the toothbrush has its origin in the "chewingsticks" used by the Babylonians as early as 3500 BC.  As the years passed, toothpicks matured into the chew stick which was about the size of a modern pencil. One end was chewed into and became softened and brush-like while the opposite end was pointed and used as a pick to clean food and debris from between the teeth.  The first true bristled toothbrush also originated in China at around 1600 AD.  By the early 1800s the bristled brushes were in general use in Europe and Japan. In 1857, H. N. Wadsworth was credited as the first American to receive a toothbrush patent as America entered the growing toothbrush market.  Thank goodness we no longer have to just chew on sticks.

CANDLE MAT
Yesterday I finished the candle mat I started earlier in the week.

Bright and cheery!  I usually don't like to bind a quilt in a light color or print but I think the bold flower print works for this one.

Here is a close-up of the decorative stitch I used in bright pink thread.  This candle mat will be going out to one of my PIF participants next week.  I hope she will like it!

GARDEN PARTY

Is anybody else joining in on the Garden Party BOM?  Sheryl of Quilting Tizzy is the creator of the darling quilt.  It contains both applique and regular quilt blocks. I love birds and this is so cute.

This is what the completed quilt will look like.  Sheryl is releasing one new block a month for the next 15 months.  Yesterday I prepared the first block for stitching...

You had to make two of these little Garden Party Love Bird's one facing each direction.  I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for the first time and had some problems with it.  Well, not so much problems as confusion.  I ended up using almost 2 1/2 sheets of the stuff when it should have only taken 1 1/2 sheets.  I kept drawing on the wrong side - my brain just couldn't get it straight.  But once I figured it out, it was easy to work with and fused the fabric nicely.  I am only going to work with scraps from my stash for this project.
Come join the fun!  The next block will be released February 19th.

2.  Blog about this giveaway and come back and leave a comment telling me you did - make sure to include a link back to your post in the commentI will check.

Make sure that you do the above in two separate comments.  If you include them in one comment it will only count as one entry.  You do not have to be a follower but I would certainly appreciate it if you were to become one - and thank you to all of you who already follow my blog!!!!  If you have a no-reply blog or do not have a blog, make sure to leave me some way to contact you.  If I can't contact you, you will not win!  This giveaway is open to everyone - yes, everyone - no matter where you live!

FINAL THOUGHT

The computer is a wonder, a miracle.  Do you ever wonder how we got by without it?  Life was simpler before the computer.  There were no instant answers to everything unless you went to the library or asked mom.  Social networking didn't exist.  Not so long ago, the computer was something you saw in sci-fi movies or when watching The Jetsons.  Now we can't live without it.  I know that I spend way too much time connected to the web.  I have to give myself time limits or I might just spend all day in front of the screen.  The computer makes it way to easy to spend money.  You no longer need to go to a brick and mortar store.  I like this technical miracle as long I don't try to understand it.  Make it simple.  Make it fun.  And thank goodness for it or I wouldn't have made so many wonderful friends!
There are three kinds of death in this world. There's heart death, there's brain death, and there's being off the network.

I would love to be included in your giveaway! I love a variety of music but enjoy 80s rock the most. My favorite song is BeautifulIn My Eyes by Joshua Kadison. It was my wedding song and reminds me of a very happy day.

Glad your family is on the mend!
My favorite type of music is a vague genre- Stuff I can run to- basically meaning quick, up-tempo things. It can be country, rock, almost anything.
Those fabrics are sooo pretty! I'm biased, though, because geraniums are one of my favorite flowers to plant every year.

My favourite music is my DH playing his guitar. Thanks so much for a chance to win this lovely fabric - it's been a long winter.

You know I love opera - love the song track from the version of the Phantom of the Opera. I have a partial Geranium quilt put together and it just doesn't POP - these fabrics would so liven her up - heck, I would even 'ribbet' blocks to add those pretties in.

So happy the family is on the mend, but will keep ya' all on the prayer list - don't fix what aint' broke!

The BOM looks fantastic, but I have set a limit and sticking too it. I will enjoy watching your garden grow - the birds are lovely.

The computer has been a god-send for me when I was/am house bound and only way to get anything was thru the net - even to talk to people. But if I have a deadline or special project - I have no problems turning it off.

Have a lovely day.

That is such a cute candle mat Linda - I've never made one but I should. And thanks for the Garden Party reminder. I have that bookmarked to save each month but forgot about it starting. I'm hoping to pick & choose from the blocks to make a wall hanging.

Except for the opera knowledge, my music tastes pretty much mirror yours. Dislike rap, jazz & heavy stuff but LOVE piano, both classical & modern. My favorites are artists who write their own music.

Thanks for the chance to win some cheery spring fabric - I am READY for spring!

I'm glad to hear your SIL is on the mend, even tho it sounds as if it's gonna take a while til he's 100% again. God bless your DD who will need to keep the drain clean.

I have a queue on YouTube that play when I'm sewing/quilting... the music ranges from 50s & 60s oldies all the way thru til today. This morning, I was listening to Sea of Love by the Honey Dippers... makes me want to lie in a hammock or on a raft somewhere warm... and just drift away.

Laurie in Maine said...

Eddie Vedder is my favorite - and I hit repeat for some of his songs over and over just because I can :) Tom Petty also, although not his newest; tried too hard to rhyme everything!

I like most kinds of music but had gotten more interested in big band and jazz once my children were in bands in school. One year they did a lot of Duke Ellington and I now really enjoy his music.

I do like Jazz, but then Winston Marsalis is jazz and I like him, too! Maybe what you don't like is Scat jazz. I am not much of a fan of that, either. I listen to a lot of classical - my car radio is set on WNPR. I also love the Rat Pack - which I think is in the jazz section. And if I am feeling spunky, I love me some Rock-a-Billy - Southern rock wins me over. Love Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZTop!

I love all sorts of music. Ranges from Heavy metal all the way to classical. I like hip hop, which true hip hop isn't rap, more more like the Sugar Hill Gang and early days of "rap". My favorites tend to be drum & bass and blues.

Having a 2 year old though, my most frequent and recent playlists have been nursery rhymes and such, though.

I like lots of different kinds of music: rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, classical, country, raggae, spirituals, kid's music, some rap. I really dislike electronic music and anything that is too loud and repetitious. I've never really listened to opera so don't know if I like it or not.

Joanna said...

Although I've reached the age where I prefer quiet music, I still blast the car radio when the Beatles, Grass Roots or Moody Blues come on with a song I like. I love geraniums, too:)

I was raised on opera and classical music with some big band thrown in for good measure but I also enjoy a lot of the modern stuff (it thrills my daughter that she can listen to her music and I'll sing along rather than telling her to turn it down/off.) If you like sweeping symphonies I recommend Yellowstone by Jett Hitt. It's amazing. I first heard it on a drive into work and it almost brought me to tears.

I like most kinds of music. Not so much rap & hip-hop, but everything else. My clock-radio has an "adult-contemporary" station on it that I wake up to...and the other radio in my room has a classical station. I love the Beach Boys, especially California Saga. I just saw the movie "The King's Speech" tonight, and it had terrific music - Bach, Beethoven & Brahms, as well as period music.
Love your candle mat! So bright & cheerful. :^D

Elsina said...

Beautiful candle-mat you made. Very inspiring, I really would like to try making something like that :) Beautiful geranium fabrics also! Thanks for the chance!

My favorite music: Celtic/folk, classic, golden oldies, soundtracks. I get totally stressed out with trance, house and heavy metal etc.

I love pop music, something happy and fun! :)

jennB said...

Well, my musical taste ranges from hip hop to broadway to pop to 50s. I'm a singer, so if I can sing to it, I love it. I was raised on the Beatles, doo-wop, and the music of the 60s, but I'm a child of the 80s so there's no telling what you might hear at any given moment from my speakers!

Call me a dork (it's OK, I'm fine with it), but I love collegiate a cappella music. (Also jazz & 80's guilty pleasures)

Hi again, Linda... I'm working my way back through posts.

OOOOH! Great Post!!! I LOVE music. The mood I'm in and what I am doing sets the style that I listen to. My most favorite are classical and sacred... specifically Chopin, the 3B's, Mendelsohn. And I have an in-house pianist, you know, who indulges me every now and again. ;-D

Contemporary sacred music has to be choral works of John Rutter (Requiem being a fave-- The Lord is My Shepherd is quite beautiful) and the Cambridge Singers. My sister studied at Peabody and being a PK, I was exposed to a lot of sacred music.

Still love Aerosmith, Journey, the Stones, CSN (mostly without Y) and James Taylor, too. Too many contemporary artists in every genre to mention. LOVE movie scores! And then there is.... The Platters and Etta James, B.B. King... which makes me think of Eric Clapton... The list could go on and on and on... Bet you're sorry you asked this question!

Your candle mat is cute! And I like the decorative stitches.

Thanks for the heads-up for the Garden Party BOM... being a birdie lover, too! And I like to applique. Sorry you had to much trouble with the Steam-A-Seam... haven't tried it. This pattern will be a great stash-buster.

HURRY SPRING!

Have a great week! ...Karen

I don't really think I stick with any specific genre of music - I love Pavarotti, Anya, Lady Antebellum, Christina Aguilera, so as you can tell, I'm not much on sticking with one "favorite". Same with my fabrics. Not just one "favorite", just a lot of "favorites". dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

I would love to win your fabric. It's lovely. I grew up with windows filled with geraniums, so I am very fond of them. My favorite music is baroque music, and everything Handel. And Bach, and Mozart, and...classical music altogether.
Thanks for giving me a chance to win.

I mostly like pop rock or alternative. I also like to listen to contemporary Christian music.

KQ Sue said...

I like Celtic, Country and Classical Music. Favorite Celtic song - Mountain Thyme.
FYI - Celtic is pronounced Keltic - only basketball people pronounce it Seltic. Kind of like nails down a blackboard when someone at a Scottish Festival says Seltic Music or Seltic Jewelry.

Nancy Sue said...

Oh Linda, how I hope your geranium fabrics help bring on the spring here on the east coast. We are going from 65 during the day to lower 30's at night. We don't know weather or whether to sweat or shiver! I'm a show tunes kinda gal so I'd have to go with the music from the broadway show "Once on This Island". Not only great music but a plot you can imagine in song just by listening to the soundtrack :)

Mutti said...
