Help Me Celebrate With A Giveaway!

Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.
~Arnold H. Glasow

Finally a finish!  I can't believe I finally put the last stitch in the Minnesota Star Quilt.  It sat idle for so long.  I started this quilt back in May of last year.  I'm so embarrassed.  I  put this quilt on the back burner so many times that I lost count.  Almost a year to complete a quilt that's just not that big (60" X 72").  I finished a king sized quilt in under four months (a few years ago).  Other projects always looked more interesting.  There was always something new to try.  And then I finally finished the top this past October.  I pieced the backing and then put it in a sandwich.  And then it layed on the spare bed, waiting to be quilted.  And waited, and waited.......  Finally I started quilting it in January - just one row.  Not difficult quilting; just quilting 1/4" away from the seam line.  No marks to follow, no fancy fmq.  And then it sat again.  I'd already missed being able to give it as a Christmas gift - also missed Valentine's Day.  Good thing the recipient didn't know she was getting it - lol!  Finally, with much determination and muscle straining it is done.  Woohoo!!!  Finished date:  April 20, 2011.

PHOTO FACT OF THE DAY

Jelly Beans
Today is Good Friday and Earth Day - two very important days.  But April 22 is also important for another reason - It's National Jelly Bean Day.  Anyone who loves these delicious, flavorsome, colorful little sweets should treat themselves on this day.  But be careful, as we all know, jelly beans are addictive.  There are many things you can do to celebrate besides eating jelly beans. Here are a few suggestions.  Why not dress in the colors of your favorite jelly bean?  You could have a jelly bean party and ask for friends to create their own special jelly bean dish.
Jelly beans are one of the oldest forms of candy we have. They date back to at least the mid-nineteenth century. Jelly bean historians believe the jelly bean center originated from Turkish Delight, which comes from the Middle East. The gummy center is made from sugar, corn syrup and other ingredients to give them their fruit taste. Machines spray the insides with colored sugar to give the beans their hard shells. Jelly beans today come in all kinds of different flavors, including spicy. You can even put different ones in your mouth to create new flavors. They are even popular with American presidents. Ronald Reagan kept a jar on his desk in the White House. Once of the most interesting facts buried in the history of the jelly bean is the fact that many of these little babies even went into space. One of the space shuttles took up a bunch of jelly beans for the shuttle crew to snack on while they were up there.

MINNESOTA STAR QUILT
(picture heavy)

And the unveiling begins......

The colors - browns and blues....

A corner revealed.....

A peak at the backing....

A little more to see.....

Here's the back with a simple row of scrap piecing in the center (ignore the shadow cast by the overhead wires)...

And here it is!  The entire quilt in the late afternoon sun.  Can you see the toes sticking out underneath.  Thanks to my DH for being my quilt holder!

And the final stitches - a label I printed myself using just muslin and freezer paper run through my ink-jet printer.  I added some left over fabric around the edges and I had a label.

DONE!  COMPLETED!  ME = HAPPY :D !!!

CELEBRATE THE FINISH WITH ME
It's Giveaway Time

FINAL THOUGHTS

It's Good Friday.  Many people will spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.  For others it is a day off from work or school.  Not everybody celebrates this religious holiday - and that's fine.  It's also Earth Day.  A day to promote awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.  It's also just Friday.  The last day of the week, the beginning of the weekend.  However you look at today I hope it finds you happy and enjoying life.

For I remember it is Easter morn,
And life and love and peace are all new born.
~Alice Freeman Palmer

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

I love the dramatic showing of the quilt - and so deserved. Just my colors! Oh, I really don't like Jelly Beans or any of those 'gummy' candies. But always have a dish set out that magically disappears over the days - gremlins!? NO my MOM. Happy Easter

Leanne said...

Your quilt is just beautiful!!! She is very lucky to be receiving this lovely quilt.
Don't feel bad about putting off the quilting, I have a quilt that's been waiting for 5 yrs. I don't like it, it's ugly and big. I might use it for practice on my long arm and give it to charity.
Have a nice Easter. xo

Your Star Quilt finish is definitely a reason to celebrate it is gorgeous. My husband and children love jellybeans and I usually take the rejected flavors. My favorite is licorice and thankfully no one else in the family likes them:) I would love to take part in your giveaway.

Linda, your star quilt is sooooo pretty! I have the same problem with finishing, plus I seem to get bored and constantly need something new and fresh - kind of annoying, that! thanks for the chance to win those beauties!

Minnesota Star is wonderful! Congratulations on the finish! I know it feels soooo good to get long-term projects off the UFO list. :D But I don't think you should feel embarrassed at all about the timing. OH - jelly beans - I love watermelon ones best. :) No. Strawberry shortcake. Wait. Cherry?

Your quilt came out gorgeous! I'm a cherry jelly bean fan.

Sandi P said...

What a beautiful quilt and I'm sure the recipient will feel blessed no matter the timing.
I've always been partial to the purple jelly beans. You know the plain old non-gourmet kind that it's not really grape, but you know it's purple - LOL. The exotic flavors like watermelon or popcorn, etc... are fun to try, but, to me at least, they just aren't really jelly beans.
Thanks for the chance to win some goodies for my stash.

Annmarie said...

Your question made me chuckle! I don't buy jelly beans any more but when I did it was always a bag of BLACK JELLY BEANS. So now I steal 1 or 2 from someone's basket - they are still the best! I love the fabric - small flowers are one of my favorites.

Sandy said...

My favorite jelly bean flavor used to be cotton candy. I don't eat them any more because I stay away from sugar as much as possible. Congrats on finishing your daughter's quilt. I'm sure she will love it!

Love the quilt, dom't feel too bad as I only just finished one of mine that had been lanquishing for 5 years waiting to be quilted and finished.
My most favourite jelly bean would have to be the black anniseed ones, the only trouble I have with them is it's hard to deny eating them when your tongue and lips are black from them LOL :) Barb.

I've had a few 'extended' finishes too! My favourite jelly bean is black...mmmmm...yum!

I really love any jelly bean flavor... literally... any. Even the Harry Potter ones that are like... grass, and dirt and weird stuff. I just love the chewyness of them. But I do try to stay away from them because Once I start, I just can't stop. :) I love those fabrics, very spring like!

Your quilt is beautiful. I love jelly beans -- my favorite flavor is licorice. I can actually find whole bags of licorice jelly beans at Easter time. A black tongue only looks good on a Chow though. Thanks for the giveaway.

Thank you for a lovely giveaway - I popped over from Val Spiers blog :) My favourite jelly bean flavour would be coconut, I think :D

Congrats on your finish! It looks lovely :D
Unfortunately (or Fortunately ;D) we don't have jelly beans here, but I am sure I've had them when I was small - may be someone brought them from abroad.
I like strawberry flavor in most of the things.
And I love the colors of the fabrics you are giving away - Thanks for the chance!

Anya said...

Root beer is my favorite jelly bean flavor! Thanks for the chance!

Cheryl's Teapots2Quilting said...

I don't eat jelly beans, but, if I did, I'd like the lemon ones, since I love lemon drops. I've been thinking of making a Dresden plate quilt, and those fabrics would be perfect for a spring Dresden plate quilt.

Heartsdesire said...

A great finish, lovely fabric. And thanks for letting me know about Jellybean Day. I missed it. So to make up for it, I'm going to the store today to get some and an extra scoop of cherry red because that's my favourite.

I hope this does not disqualify me - I do not like jelly beans. I don't know why, I do not recall ever eating them as a kid either. I love sweet, but not jelly beans. Maybe I would like them now, I am sure they are better then the ones from my youth - just for you, I will look into this matter. lol

I love blue and brown together in a quilt; you fabric choices look lovely together.
Jelly beans? I like orange.
Thanks for your giveaway; I hope I'm as lucky as you are! lol

Susan @ loviedux (lovieducks@gmail.com) said...

I don't know if this counts but I think my favorite would be a jelly belly flavor like cotton candy (first thing that came to mind when I thought about it).

Otherwise, it might be the orange or the pink.

Thank u for the giveaway opportunity - those are pretty fabrics.

Thanks for the chance to win the fat quarters. Honestly I can't stand jelly beans. My husband on the other hand can't get enough - doesn't matter flavor, but he says the starburst ones are the best!

I think my favorite might be jelly belly cherry, but almost all the jelly bellies are so good! I hate licorice (black) and I don't like the spotty peppermint ones, but otherwise, they are all yummy.

I love your Minnesota Star. The colors are so warmly comforting, and it looks great. Lucky recipient! Congratulations on finishing, and thanks for offering the giveaway.

Ah Jelly Beans, Thankfully my son does not have a blog. He is 15 and quilts but doesn't blog. I know he would pick one of the terrible BeanBoozled flavors, ya not liking the barf jelly bean YUCK.

I do love the Buttered Popcorn jelly bean YUM!

Thanks for hosting a giveaway. Too much fun.

Complete side note. My mom is severely allergic to sugar, this last year our family took a tour of the Jelly belly factory in California, I am telling you the air outside smells sweet, she got sick from walking the tour lol. The kids were in heaven!!!

Your sew is lovely! I like the customary white jam beans. I don't know what the flavor should be yet they are great. I like the fashioner jam beans as well however from time to time get them, so I haven't figured out how to try and deal with what the flavors are, not to mention pick a top choice. A debt of gratitude is in order for an opportunity to win texture
